Seagate Project is a 15 bedded resettlement unit providing supported accommodation to men and women with severe mental health and addiction problems. The project offers a homely environment and consists of 7 self-contained bed-sits and 2 cluster flats, each with 4 private bedrooms and communal living areas.
On average, residents stay at the project for a period of 18 months - 3 years. The project is a dry unit and aims to help clients develop the life skills needed for an independent or less supported tenancy. Residents are assisted to live their lives as independently as possible, and are encouraged to make their own choices and decisions. Helping them to gain greater independence and enable them to lead a happy and fulfilled life.
Lorraine was a long-term patient at Royal Dundee Liff Hospital before moving into the Seagate Project last November. Risk assessments and a great deal of planning took place between project staff and health professionals to ensure the transition was successful.
Lorraine has a diagnosis of schizophrenia, hypothyroidism and previous problematic alcohol use, which resulted in family tensions. She has settled in well and enjoys cleaning her cluster flat, and is at ease with her fellow flatmates. Lorraine is particularly keen on cooking and always eager to try out new recipes. She looks forward to the time when she will move into one of the project’s self-contained bed-sits where she can cook for friends and family.
Lorraine works closely with her key worker on areas such as personal finance and budgeting skills, household management and healthy eating. Lorraine also attends weekly art classes, which were organised by her Community Psychiatric Nurse. A recent achievement of Lorraine’s included a handmade and decorated papier-mâché battery operated clock, which she gave to her daughter.
